Timothy Livengood

"Dr. Tim" Livengood is a planetary astrophysicist in the Department of Space Science Research at Challenger Center for Space Science Education.

He graduated from Towson Senior High School in Towson, Maryland, in 1984 and went to college at Washington University in St. Louis from 1980–1984, where he studied physics. He entered graduate school at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1984, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He completed graduate school in 1991 with a thesis reporting on studies of Jupiter's aurora in the ultraviolet.

He went on to a National Research Council post-doctoral appointment at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), from 1991 through 1994, using infrared spectroscopy to study the temperature and molecular composition of planetary atmospheres. From 1994 through 1999, he was a member of the Research Faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park, continuing his collaborative research with GSFC.

He joined Challenger Center in 1999 in order to continue his work in astronomical research combined with the opportunity to support science education in this country and to communicate the excitement of scientific discovery to the public. His research interests include planetary atmospheres, planetary aurora, planetary rings, comets, extrasolar planets, brown dwarf stars, and cool giant stars.
